The brief asked for a sense of privacy in the waiting room which was completely open to the reception desk, and to hopefully create a welcoming feel. A strategically-placed bookcase partitions the area without closing it off, allowing for a degree of separation without impacting functionality, procedures and lighting. As most of their patients come here for prosthetic limbs, this is one of the final steps at the end of a long process of procedures… so my vision was to create a space that looked and felt like the polar opposite of a hospital. Which meant the light coloured walls had to go! A dramatic change that completely transformed the space and, despite a little initial resistance by a few staff members, was soon embraced by all and the final result has many visitors in awe of the space. I’m told a patient was reluctant to go home because she loved the space so much she just wanted to stay there!
