Frequently Asked Questions to an Interior Designer
What does an interior designer do?
Interior Designers guide you in the right direction to transform your premises into a space that is both beautiful and functional.
An interior designer will take into consideration your current furniture and pieces; the style of your home; your needs, wishes and requirements; the interior design style (or styles!) that attract you; your lifestyle, personality and hobbies… then the designer will put together a proposal that combines it all through expert use of colour, spatial awareness, texture, shape, materials and finishes, furniture, lighting, soft furnishings such as linen and window treatments, artwork and accessories…. resulting in a space that is uniquely yours and of which you can be proud.

Why should I hire an interior designer?
A professional and experienced interior designer will offer clever solutions for your current issues, introducing ideas you had not thought of and creating dedicated spaces made to suit your requirements resulting in a space that maximises functionality and looks like it’s meant to be. Possessing a good understanding of the elements and principles of great interior design, an interior designer will deliver a cohesive result that effortlessly flows from room to room!
An interior designer does all the time-consuming behind-the-scenes work for you: running around, comparing colours and finishes, designing cabinetry, sourcing quotes and keeping a record of costs, making the whole process a breeze for the client – and even fun!!
Hiring an interior designer also means minimizing room for error, especially with renovations. Renovations without professional and detailed working drawings are a recipe for disaster and cost thousands more than if you get it right from the beginning. An interior designer will also guide you on making selections that are functional and low-maintenance (at the very least point it out to you so you’re making an informed decision) .
Add the fact that interior designers have access to wholesale suppliers who do not sell direct to the public, and there are plenty of reasons to engage an interior designer for your project!

When should I hire an interior designer?
If you’re building or renovating, the earlier the better for engaging an interior designer.
It’s so disheartening to visit a new client’s home and realise there was poor planning involved in their build/renovation and what would have been a small change back then will be a huge exercise now!
An experienced interior designer can foresee issues early on and help you avoid them by, for example, suggesting better locations for plumbing and electrical, more functional cabinetry layout etc.
An interior designer will also be of great value when selecting your tiles, flooring, finishes, hardware and window treatments so the finished result is a home you’ll be really proud of.
If you’re furnishing / redecorating, it’s best to engage an interior designer 5-6 months before you want the room complete.
Furniture lead times have skyrocketed in the last few years, especially in Perth (order-in sofas usually take 3-4 months to be delivered).
However, not everyone can afford to wait months – if you need your key pieces of furniture sooner, suggestions can be made based on whether there is stock on hand.
Communication is key, let your interior designer know your circumstances and they can advise what your options are.

What should I do before I contact an interior designer?
Prepare yourself by getting to know your own interior design style: look up images online (www.houzz.com.au is a great database) and save your favourites to show the interior designer when asked.
Also, have a think about your total budget for your project. An interior designer needs to know what they’re working with upfront, so that they can advise you whether it’s realistic.
Alana believes great interior design doesn’t need to cost the world – and she will never suggest an item with a silly price such as a $3000 coffee table (even though most other designers will!) – but she is aware that prices have increased significantly over the last few years.
If you don’t know what your budget is, Alana can provide a loose estimate of costs for your furnishing project based on mid-end suppliers that will get you a STUNNING result for LESS than what most other designers would.
Alana is cost-conscious and will always aim to keep costs down wherever possible, choosing wisely where to invest a bit more to get the results you want.

How do I choose the right interior designer for me?
Not every interior designer will be a good fit.
Firstly, consider their experience and talent by assessing their portfolio – do you like what you see? Do they seem able to work with various styles, and, if not, are their style a match to yours?
Next, check out their reviews, what do past clients say? Are they easy to work with? Did they meet expectations? Or, even better, did they exceed them? Would those clients use that interior designer again?
Lastly, an initial meeting will help you put a face to the name and get a feel for the designer’s personality to make sure you’ll be happy working with them.
